The product packaging industry consists of a variety of folding carton box types, all of which serve different design purposes and functions. From reverse and straight tuck designs to different folding carton materials, there’s a lot to unpack when it comes to choosing the right form to house your products and showcase your brand.

What Are Custom Folding Carton Boxes?

As the name suggests, custom folding carton boxes are a type of rectangular packaging made of paperboard. They’re typically used to encase single product items such as perfume bottles, bottles of alcohol, candles, tall shot glasses, and various types of beauty products.

Custom carton folding boxes feature tuck flaps on the top and bottom and can be corrugated on the inside to provide sufficient padding to store and transport fragile products safely. Create a visual packaging masterpiece by adding bespoke prints and images that make your products stand out on store shelves and excite customers receiving them in the mail.

What Are the Different Types of Folding Carton Boxes?

As far as custom-printed packaging goes, folding carton boxes are amongst the most conceptually unique, versatile, and structurally sound options that aptly serve the dual purpose of brand promotion and product storage. Here are some of the most popular types of folding carton boxes and their uses:

  • Two-piece boxes. These boxes consist of two pieces—a slightly wider lid and tray—that fit together perfectly. Items such as clothing, jewellery, and shoes can be stored in the tray and covered with the lid for protection.
  • Straight tuck boxes. Typically used for cosmetics, essential oils, and perfumes, straight tuck boxes feature top and bottom flaps that are located on the same side to seal the box. End slits are added to the bottom of the box to prevent the end tucks from opening so the product stays in place.
  • Reverse tuck boxes. Unlike straight tuck boxes, reverse tuck boxes can be opened from both ends. Reverse tuck boxes usually have a plastic tray inside that holds the various components of a product in place. The tray is tightly packed to prevent movement, but it can slide out on either side.
  • Sleeve packaging. A sleeve is a hollow carton that doesn’t really serve a functional purpose. It’s mainly used as a decorative piece that glides over a plain box that contains the product.
  • Auto-lock bottom boxes. Also known as auto or crash-bottom boxes, this type of folding carton has a top flap that’s tucked into a narrow slit on each side of the box to lock it in place.
  • 1-2-3 bottom boxes. This box is also known as a snap or lock bottom box because it has a three-step assembly process. Push the two side and bottom flaps into each other to lock them into place and voila! You have a durable box that can carry bulky items.
